The Basilica of Santa Eufemia is located in the very historical center of Grado, the old Roman Castrum of Grado. Much of the historical patrimony of the island is, in fact, clustered in this part of the resort, the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Baptistery included.
The construction works at the Basilica of Santa Eufemia started in the early 6th century, but it was not until 579 that they completed by order of Bishop Elia, which means this basilica is the oldest Christian place of worship still standing in Grado. The basilica is an architectural structure superimposed on a former smaller place of worship, the Basilica of Petrus, the remains of which can be seen, in part, within the Basilica of Santa Eufemia.
The edifice is, by its history and architectural design, a substantiation of the Byzantine influence on Grado. Lines are simple and the building contour evidences a striking architectural sobriety softened, as it were, by the interior mosaic which is, by far, the most eye catching decorative element of this place of worship.
The treasury of the basilica is said to keep assets of great value.
