Barbana is a small island located in the Grado Lagoon, and it used to be, in fact, connected to the rest of island of Grado until several centuries ago. The reputation of the island was boosted by force of the Marian sanctuary located on it, a place featuring a surprisingly active religious life. Indeed, the famed Perdon de Barbana gathers a large crowd of pilgrims every first Sunday of July. The sanctuary can be visited virtually each day for the religious services provided here by the small community of Franciscans.
Motoscafisti Gradesi provides extensive boat trips in the surroundings of Grado, but the operator stands out by being the chief link between Grado and Barbana. The daily trips to the small island neighboring on Grado are not tourist-related exclusively, but they also service the interests of the locals (or foreigners, for that matter) who want to get a religious thrill while praying at the Marian sanctuary located on the island.
Isola di Barbana is, indeed, one stop on the marine routes covered by Lagoon Boat Aquileia, but visitors should keep in mind the tourist itineraries provided by this operator are much more extensive, focusing on covering the entire Grado Lagoon with terminals at Aquileia and Grado.
